On May 16, 2006 voters approved a half cent increase in sales tax (7.6% to 8.1%), to raise $2.1 billion dollars for transportation improvements over a 20 year period. The traffic improvements include: wider roads, bus pullouts, and a modern light rail transit (LRT) street car.
The LRT street car will initially route from the University Medical Center to the University of Arizona campus, then will run through downtown Tucson. Finally, the street car will end up at the Rio Nuevo project area,(the site of revitalization in downtown Tucson).
July 1, 2006 marked the first day that the half cent increase went into affect for the City of Tucson and Pima County.
